Sri Lanka Abolishes Lawmakers Pensions

(MENAFN) Sri Lanka's parliament voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to abolish legislators' pensions, delivering on a signature campaign pledge by the country's left-wing government as it continues to pursue sweeping austerity reforms.

The bill cleared the 225-member parliament by a commanding margin of 154 votes to two, according to an official parliamentary statement. Under the legislation that had previously governed legislators' benefits, any lawmaker aged 65 or older was entitled to a pension upon completing a five-year term. The newly enacted law eliminates those benefits entirely — for both sitting and former legislators.

The pension rollback is the latest in a series of politically charged austerity measures pursued by the administration of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, whose left-leaning government took office in 2024. Earlier moves included the withdrawal of state-funded housing, official vehicles, and thousands of security personnel that had been assigned to former presidents at public expense.

Dissanayake's government rose to power on the back of widespread youth-led mass protests that ultimately forced former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign amid one of the island nation's most severe economic crises in modern history.

The near-unanimous vote signals strong legislative appetite for continued institutional reform, as Colombo moves to rebuild public trust following years of economic mismanagement and political turmoil.
