Sri Lanka at UN: Rebuild Gaza Now, Back Two-State Solution
"Recovery and reconstruction of Gaza must be an early priority," Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said in an address to the body's 81st session in New York.
"We are pained by the developments in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. We fully support the inalienable rights of Palestinians, including their right to self-determination," Herath said.
He said Colombo favors settling the Palestine issue along the 1967 border formula. "We stand in solidarity with the international community in calling for an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, existing side by side with Israel, in peace, within the pre-1967 borders," he said.
Herath welcomed a UN Security Council resolution on a Gaza ceasefire and urged "all parties" to uphold it. Voicing alarm over the widening conflict in the Middle East, he said dialogue is the "only viable" path forward.
Turning to climate, Herath pointed to a run of climate-driven disasters worldwide in recent years, especially in South Asia. He said developing nations, which bear the "least" share of global emissions, are footing the bill for the crisis.
Citing recent flash floods and mudslides in Nepal and China that killed more than 1,400 people, with thousands still missing, he said the demand for action on climate impacts is overdue.
"Climate justice must become an urgent reality," he said.
